The War of Triple Alliance The War of Triple Alliance started in 1865 by the dictator Carlos Antonio López’s son Francisco López. It was a war between the allied coutries of Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. In 1865, Uruguay, Brazil, and Argentina signed the Treaty of the Triple Alliance in Buenas Aires. It joined the three River Plate countries against Paraguay. In 1870, Paraguay lost the war and 55,000 square miles of their land.(Paraguay). For Paraguay, the loss of the land ment they lost as much as two-thirds of its adult male population. (Paraguay History).Troops from Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina remained in Paraguay until 1876. The final end of the war didn’t officially end until 1870. The war between the four countries caused the most deaths in South American history and is known as the bloodiest war in Latin American history. After the war, the politics and the Paraguayan government was very unstable for the next generation and Paraguay was put into a massive debt.
